Once the West Indies had become an essential base for every naval power, rum quickly gained in popularity among seafarers. The rum barrels were stored in the gunroom together with the weapons and gunpowder. For a spirit to be “gunpowder proof”, it had to be distilled at a high percentage.
At 65%, the “Gunroom” corresponds exactly to this style: it is a blend of rums of different ages that fall into the category of heavy British rums. Demerara pot-still rum from Guyana makes up the majority of the blend. But there are also rums from Barbados, Trinidad and Jamaica.
