The literal interpretation of this saying – long may your chimney smoke – is perhaps not entirely appropriate in these times of global warming. But this slightly old-fashioned Scottish saying is the best way to wish someone a long and healthy life.
However, the underlying idea always appeals to me all over again; the thought that as long as the neighbour’s chimney is lit, he is well off, his house is warm and cosy, and the hope that it will stay so for as long as possible.
I hope that despite the hectic times and everything, we may let our eyes gaze into the distance from time to time to realize that we are not doing so badly despite all the challenges.
